William Sutton comes from Dunblane, Scotland. He has written for The Times and the Fortean Times, acted in the longest play in the world, and played cricket for Brazil. His first novel is a Victorian mystery of a gleaming metropolis mired in corruption.
He writes for international magazines about language, music and futurology. His plays have been produced on radio and in London fringe theatres. He has performed at events from the Edinburgh Festival to High Down Prison, often with a ukulele. He teaches Latin and plays accordion with chansonnier Philip Jeays.

I’ve written three mystery novels, set in Victorian London, less whodunnit than what-they-going-to-do.
Sergeant Campbell Lawless, known as Watchman, struggles with clandestine opponents and his conscience as he strives to keep the cobbled streets safe for the citizens of the metropolis. He co-opts as helpers an urchin gang and a sharp-tongued librarian, but beneath the streets to unearth the stink of social inequality broils; beneath the petticoats of Soho lurk dangers; in the mechanisms of Progress lies destruction.
Novelist-journalist-tutor Dr William Sutton offers workshops, talks and clubs. “I bring the prompts and structure, you supply the creativity.” He’s been delivering workshops for twenty years, in Portsmouth Bookfest, in University of Portsmouth, at the Ashcroft Arts Centre, Petersfield Museum, Hampshire Libraries and more.
